If you’re living with the pain and stiffness of osteoarthritis, you’re likely searching for ways to stay active, get back to doing what you love, and avoid heavy pain medications or invasive joint replacement surgeries. Am I right?
Mistletoe therapy is a powerful option, but if you’ve never had it before, it’s completely normal to feel a bit unsure about what actually happens during a visit.
Here’s a clear, step-by-step breakdown of what you can expect during your mistletoe treatment, from the moment you step into our clinic to how your body responds in the days following.
We’ve designed the process to be as calm, transparent, and comfortable as possible. Here’s how your initial visit unfolds:
Booking and Intake: You’ll start by booking an injection consultation online or by calling our clinic in Nanaimo. Before you arrive, you’ll fill out your intake, health insurance, and consent forms online so everything’s set.
Warm Welcome: When you arrive on time, our friendly front desk team greets you and gets you settled.
In-Depth Consultation: I’ll introduce myself and invite you downstairs into our private treatment room. We’ll sit down for about 35 minutes to discuss your health concerns, relevant medical history, and healing goals.
Custom Treatment Plan: Together, we’ll map out a personalized treatment plan that fits your body's specific needs.
Your First Treatment: I’ll administer your very first mistletoe injection before our 45-minute appointment wraps up.
Easy Check-Out: Our aforementioned, friendly front desk staff will check your extended health benefits coverage, let you know if there’s any remaining balance, process your payment, and help you schedule your next session.
One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that mistletoe treatment is just a single shot. In reality, it involves 10 to 20 tiny microinjections placed right into the top layers of your skin directly over the affected joint.
We’re usually targeting joints like knees, hips, shoulders, necks, thumbs, or ankles. The the injections feel like tiny mosquito bites.
Any mild discomfort from the needle is over in just a few seconds. It can be normal to feel nervous about needles, I get that!
I work with many needle-phobic patients and use specific techniques to keep you calm and relaxed so your body stays completely at ease. One patient when from, "Fully in flight!" to "Oh! That's easy. We've got a strategy!"
Mistletoe therapy for osteoarthritis is what we call a reactive therapy. That means we’re deliberately stimulating your immune system to prompt a localized healing response.
Within 12 to 48 hours after your treatment, you’ll typically notice those little injection spots turning red, warm, and slightly itchy. This is completely normal! It’s a great sign showing that we’ve hit the exact right concentration for where your immune system is currently at.

If we ever see those small individual spots merge into one large red area bigger than 5 centimeters, it simply tells us we’ve pushed past your tolerance threshold.
Next time, we’ll dial back the dosage so we’re staying right on the optimal edge of your system’s sweet spot.
If the itchiness or warmth feels annoying, applying a natural calendula cream from your local health food store or pharmacy helps soothe the skin nicely.
Many patients notice relief remarkably fast. In fact, it’s very common to feel an immediate improvement right after your appointment, partly due to the lidocaine blended into the syringe.
This relief often lasts for days. For example, a patient I saw recently experienced five full days of tremendous relief right after her first session.
Another patient came in after two weeks and said he wasn't noticing anything. When I dug deeper and he meant he hadn't noticed any episodes of joint pain or stiffness since his first visit!
Because mistletoe works to alter and potentially halt disease progression, one single session won’t fix the underlying condition long-term, even though it can feel good right away.
I usually recommend starting with 4 weekly treatments to properly evaluate how your body responds, as some people are slower responders.
Most patients achieve long-lasting improvements after a series of 4 to 10 treatments.
Mistletoe is ideal for people diagnosed with osteoarthritis in joints like shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, thumbs, or spine joints in the neck and lower back. Treating cervical and lumbar degeneration is especially impactful because it relieves pressure on the nerves leaving your spinal cord.
Most of my patients choose this path because they want to avoid joint replacement surgeries and heavy pain medications. But most people aren't only running away from pain, they’re moving toward their personal life goals: hiking, traveling, gardening, keeping up with grandkids, and enjoying everyday life with ease and comfort in their bodies.
Because mistletoe cranks up immune activity, we can’t use it when your immune system is already overworked—think of it like adding gasoline to a fire. Mistletoe therapy isn’t suitable if you have:
Active infections, fever (≥ 38°C), or acute inflammation
Active autoimmune conditions or chronic granulomatous diseases (like Crohn's or TB)
Mistletoe allergies or active treatment with immunosuppressants or cytokine therapies
Hyperthyroidism with tachycardia
Tendonitis/bursitis in the target area
Pregnancy.
