By the time people come to see me, they’re often at their wit’s end. The most common story I hear involves cortisone injections that provided temporary relief or alternative treatments like acupuncture or physiotherapy that just couldn’t quite get them over the finish line (sometimes literally!).
Some have already had hip or knee replacements. For example they’ve had "lefty" done, but they’re desperate to avoid the same fate for "ol’ righty."
If you’ve been told that your joint pain is just an inevitable part of getting older or that surgery is your only remaining option, I’m here to tell you there’s another path worth exploring.
When we inject mistletoe into the top layers of the skin around an affected joint, it creates small micro-inflammations. This signals your body’s immune system to pay attention and focus on that specific area. That initial response happens with the needle and fluid itself in general similar to what you’d see with dextrose injections.
But mistletoe offers advantages that go far beyond a simple injection response.
Mistletoe isn’t just a quick band-aid; it works directly with your body’s innate ability to heal joint tissue through several key mechanisms:
Decreases Swelling: It acts as a powerful natural anti-inflammatory to reduce joint effusion.
Enhances Circulation: As a rubefacient, it boosts local blood flow. Better blood flow means better nutrient delivery to the joint, while helping carry away waste products and inflammatory markers. both of which lead to improved function and repair
Modulates Your Immune System: It helps your body’s immune system become more responsive and less reactive over time.
Provides Potent Analgesic Relief: Patients experience significant, natural pain relief.
Stops Degeneration: It inhibits the breakdown of cartilage, slowing down or stopping the degenerative process entirely.
Promotes Real Repair: It has the potential to rebuild cartilage and elastic tissues for better flexibility and resilience. In fact, many of my clinical colleagues have seen it help dissolve bone spurs over time.
I love seeing how these biological changes turn into real-life improvements. One of my favorite examples is a patient who came to me with severe hip osteoarthritis. Her daily life was completely disrupted. It was hard to just get out of bed each morning, and her pain was keeping her from the things she loved most, like gardening and hiking.
Her transformation happened in stages:
After 2 treatments: She woke up one morning, stood up by her bed, and thought to herself, "How did I get up here so fast?" She didn't need to unfold her body, brace herself, or wince in agony. She was just up and standing, quickly and easily.
After 5 treatments: She told me, "I can put my boots on without pain." For anyone who’s had to live with joint pain, you know how daunting these small daily behaviors that we several times a day. Even just sitting down and getting up from the toilet can be a challenge! Those micro-wins make a massive impact on daily life.
After 8 treatments: She came back from a long outing with her husband and dogs and squealed with excitement: "I'm sore, but not in my joints. I'm sore because my muscles were working! It's the good, normal kind of sore."
If you’re curious about safety, side effects, or what a typical treatment schedule looks like, you’re not alone. I got you! I’ve written a detailed breakdown covering everything you need to know about mistletoe injection frequency and treatment protocols.
Often I'll include lidocaine in the mistletoe injections to get an added neural therapy benefit.
I’m a firm optimist when it comes to healing, sometimes obnoxiously so.
Why?
Because I believe, more than anything, that our bodies innately know how to heal. They want to heal, and they can, when they’re given the proper circumstances.
While we often think of osteoarthritis as a simple "wear and tear" disease, it’s deeply connected to systemic inflammation.
Mistletoe helps set up the right internal environment for recovery, especially when combined with a low-inflammatory lifestyle.
Several of my colleagues who’ve administered mistletoe injections for OA over many years help patients avoid joint replacement surgery altogether.
And I don’t just mean people who subjectively decided against surgery. I mean patients who were no longer candidates because follow-up imaging showed that their joint degeneration had stopped and repaired. Like whaaa?
If there’s something in your life you want to get back to doing, or something new you’ve wanted to try but haven’t been able to because of joint pain, mistletoe therapy for osteoarthritis might be the key to getting your life back.
