Dr. Tonia Winchester, Nanaimo Naturopathic doctor discusses the notions of rewards and treats and how we can sabotage ourselves. She discusses what healthy treat actually is.

What is a "healthy treat"?

September 15, 20252 min read

Patients often tell me that they'll be doing really well on their food plan, their eating program, and then something good or bad will happen.

For example, maybe they reach their first weight loss goal. (Good, right?)

Or maybe poop hits the fan at work. (Bad, right?)

Then they say to me,

"Well, then I deserved a treat."

They often follow up that statement with a question, "

"I deserve a treat, don't I?"

And I mean... sure... you deserve a treat. But maybe not in the way you think.

This is how I define treat for myself:

It's a treat to be able to get up every day with ease in my joints and suppleness in my muscles so that I'm strong, flexible, able-bodied, and agile enough to amble about in this world, ultimately to do the things that I want to do.

That to me is a treat.

The cheesecake is not a treat for me. The cookies, chips, or the things that detract me from my deeper

reason of why I want to be well are not the treat.

The treat is being well for the sake of all the things that I want to do.

I am curious if you've ever said that,

"Well, I deserve a treat."

And then the treat is something that counteracts the thing that you've

been working so hard on.

I find that super interesting in human behavior. And I get it. I really get why it happens and I get where it comes from.

And also... maybe it's time to grow up and grow out of that?

Maybe it's time to see your future health, your future agility, your future peace and ease in your body as the treat. Maybe that's the treat you deserve.

Maybe the treat you deserve is also coming in for some IV nutrient therapy and giving your cells the treat that they deserve because they work so hard for you.

ADDENDUM:

I'm not saying don't ever have a treat. Don't let treats become a thing that are not treats anymore.

What I'm noticing is that people will give themselves a treat. Then they'll give themselves another the next day, and then the next.

That's not the treat.

Treats are special. Remember that.
