To be eligible for IV iron infusions I need to see recent bloodwork (taken with in the last 4 weeks)
You can either do this through your GP or Nurse practitioner or through me (billed privately). See below.
I need to see the following (costs if billed privately through my clinic):
Iron panel and CBC (about $120).
Liver & Kidney Panels, Electrolytes. (about $120).
COST: $180
TIME: 45 minutes
Because... safety first.
Before you are eligible for IV iron therapy we need to have a consult so I can understand the full history and your goals with iron infusion therapy.
We'll review your blood work and do any relevant physical exams (blood pressure for example). If it's warranted and safe to do so, and we have enough time allotted ** we can do the first iron infusion that day or book you back in to begin.
Please come to your appointment fed and hydrated.

I use Venofer (iron sucrose) as it comes with the lowest risk and best safety profile (for a clinic my size).
I recommend weekly infusions for a total of 4 treatments. Each week your IV will contain up to 100 mg of iron.
Your first treatment might be a modified dose, depending on what I learn in your injection consult.
Most see clinical improvements between 3 and 21 days after.
We typically see ferritin increase by 10-15 points for each 100 mg of iron administered (less if anemic).
We will rerun the Iron Panel and CBC approximately 4-5 weeks after your last treatment.
Please come to your appointment fed and hydrated.
Can we please talk about iron, more specifically, iron deficiency?
Iron is an essential mineral that we need so our red blood cells can carry oxygen to our trillions of body cells. Those cells use that oxygen to make energy for us and build our bodies. More specifically, iron deficiency can lead to anemia. This is a deficiency in red blood cells which means the system is less able to move oxygen around the body. This means the cells are less able to make energy and build and heal the body.
Symptoms of iron deficiency or anemia can include:
Fatigue
Dizziness
shortness of breath
Palpitations
Weakness
Soreness
hair loss
Tinnitus
poor immune function
restless legs
poor memory
brain fog
Anxiety
Depression
sleep disturbances
Hypothyroidism
weight gain.
People who are most at risk of iron deficiency or anemia include:
Vegans
Vegetarians
those who menstruate, especially with heavy periods
pregnant and postpartum women
folks with any kind of digestive issue
people taking proton pump inhibitors or other stomach medications
milk drinkers, and dairy eaters
coffee consumers.
Why might supplementing not work? You may know that iron supplements historically have had a bad reputation for being really hard on the gut, causing constipation and pain. There are better options these days, but paradoxically supplementing can trigger a hormone that prevents iron absorption. Plus, plant sources of iron are three times less absorbable. So what do we do?
