You’ve probably been hearing a lot about glutathione lately, and you might be wondering, "Is IV Glutathione right for me?" As one of our body's best antioxidants, it’s getting a lot of attention for good reason.
Whether you’re looking to bounce back from an illness or just want to support your overall health, I’m going to break down exactly how it works, who it’s for, and what you’ll experience.
This treatment can be used for so many different things. At its core, glutathione is a powerhouse, superstar, mega-massive antioxidant.
Because it contains a sulfur molecule, it’s also great for helping your liver detoxify from the unforgiving, high-stress lifestyles most of us are leading.
Here are a few of the biggest ways I’ve seen it help my patients:
Acting as a mucolytic to break down mucus and make it easier for your body to expel it
Improving immune function, restoring balance especially after infections and colds
Decreasing incidence of infections, especially of the lungs and sinuses
Supporting anti-aging efforts, brightening skin, and improving overall energy levels
Improving athletic performance and stamina
Decreasing overall inflammation in the body
Healing nerve damage, especially for patients recovering from chemotherapy treatments
Overall wellness. These treatments help you become what I call wellness prone.
To give you an idea of how well this works, I’ve got a patient who was dealing with chronic and recurrent lung infections after having COVID.
She is committed to coming in for monthly glutathione IVs, and she swears up and down that they’re keeping her from getting sick.
She’s got a young son at home who brings all the standard germs back from school. He’s been sick three times recently, but she hasn't caught a thing!
It’s very common for people with lung issues, including acute or chronic infections, to benefit from this.
It’s also fantastic for anyone with an immune deficiency who finds they’re getting sick frequently or taking a really long time to recover from standard colds.
However, it’s not for absolutely everyone.
If you’re an asthmatic or have reactive airways, you should stay away from this specific treatment, as it could theoretically trigger a reaction. It's not an absolute contraindication but something to be aware of.
A lot of people ask me why they shouldn't just grab a glutathione pill from the health food store.
Here’s the deal: anytime we’re delivering a nutrient via IV infusion, we’re completely bypassing the gut. If you haven't noticed... I'm a big fan of this!
True story: our modern lives are hard on our bodies.
We’re living in a stressful, dirty world, and the function of our gut goes down when we’re stressed.
Relying on healthy digestion and absorption is tough these days. In fact, the oral absorption rate of glutathione is only anywhere from 1% to 10%.
But wait, there’s more.
Glutathione is a peptide made of three amino acids (glutamine, glycine, and cysteine). If you take it orally, your digestive system will break that protein down into single amino acids.
For your body to actually use it as glutathione, your liver has to work hard to reassemble those individual pieces. If your liver is already compromised or overworked, my faith in that happening is very low.
When we administer it intravenously, I can trust it’s going exactly where it’s needed without your body expending extra energy to digest, absorb, and reassemble it.
The actual treatment is quick and easy. The glutathione goes into a 100 mL saline bag, which drips through very quickly in about 20 minutes. We’ll usually book you in a 30-minute timeslot, giving us plenty of time for a quick check-in, connecting the line, and disconnecting you at the end.
It’s a very neutral-feeling IV, meaning it isn't acidic or irritating to your veins at all.
You might feel a cooling sensation, a bit of heaviness, or slight pressure in your arm, but I’ll offer you a heating pad which helps with all of those sensations.
Some folks notice the benefits within the first 24 hours. For others, it takes a little longer depending on the severity and duration of their concerns. That’s why I always suggest starting with 3 to 4 weekly treatments.
Once you’re feeling the benefits, we’ll typically move to monthly maintenance treatments.
If you’re ready to see how this can help, we’ll start by booking a 45 minute injection consult. That’s when you and I will sit down, go through your case history, and review any lab tests or imaging scans you might have.
If you’d like to have both your consult and your first treatment in the same visit, we’ll need to extend that first appointment to 75 minutes. We don’t have this specific combo available in our online booking system, so you’ll just need to give us a call to set that up. After that, your subsequent treatments will be a quick 30 minutes!
If you’re looking to explore other options before your visit, you can read more about our nutrient injections and vitamin IVs to see what else might fit your needs.
